About Substrate Digest

Substrate Digest is a weekly, plain language digest of new research in nutrition, metabolism and gut science, written for athletes, coaches, dietitians and scientists.

The differentiator is not the summaries, it is the caveats. Every study we cover carries a standing "What this does not show" section. Most research coverage tells you what a study found. We think telling you what it did not find is at least as useful, and nobody else in this space does it consistently.

Editorial standards

  • Conference abstracts and preprints are labelled not peer reviewed every single time they appear.
  • The publication date of every paper is verified at the source where possible. Press releases routinely resurface months old papers, and we flag every such case we catch.
  • We never state a number that could not be confirmed at its source. We say it is unconfirmed instead.
  • Numbers always carry units and uncertainty. A percentage with no p value or interval is not publishable here.
  • No stock photography, ever. If an image is needed it is a chart built from the study's own data.

Independence

Published by Substrate Digest, editorially independent. No product is mentioned, promoted or excluded on commercial grounds.

Not medical advice

  • Nothing on this site is medical or dietary advice. We make no health claims and give no dosing recommendations. Talk to a qualified professional about your own situation.
